  • Back

Nucleus

Controls all the functions of the cell; cell growth, differentiation, reproduction, function

Nuclear Membrane

Double phospholipid bilayer with pores that surrounds the nucleus

Nucleoplasm

Cytoplasm found within the nucleus

Chromosomes

Tightly wound DNA with proteins

Chromatin

Unwound DNA in the nucleus

Nucleolus

Dense region within the nucleus that is responsible for rRNA (and therefore ribosome) production.

Cytoplasm

Gelatinous fluid which fills the central portion of the cell.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ROUGH)

Attached to the membranes of the nucleus; site of ribosomes and therefore protein synthesis.

Channels store products as well as serve as passages.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (SMOOTH)

Site of lipid production and drug detoxification. Channels store products as well as serve as passages.

Golgi Apparatus/Golgi Body

Flattened saccuoles which received products synthesized by the cell and modify, assemble, label, package, store and ship them to parts of the cell or the cell membrane for export.

Vesicles

Transport packets made up of membrane which carry things around the cell.

Vacuoles

Storage spaces made up of membrane which store things that will be needed later or things that could be harmful if left to float around the cell.

Lysosomes

Vesicles filled with digestive enzymes that destroy the contents through hydrolysis.

Cilia/Flagella

function in cellular movement.

Chloroplast

Perform photosynthesis with the aid of chlorophyll; PLANTS & BACTERIA ONLY

Mitochondria

Perform cellular respiration that creates cellular energy which is used to power the entire cell

Cell wall

Made of cellulose, found on the outside of the plasma membrane and is semi-permeable; PLANTS & BACTERIA ONLY

Plasma membrane/cellular membrane

Made of phospholipids, proteins, steroids and carbohydrates; is selectively permeable and surrounds and encloses cells.

Centrioles

Found in Animal cells ONLY, aids in the cell division.
