8 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
Plasma Membrane
contains receptors for communication; forms intercellular connections; acts as physical barriers to enclose cell contents, regulates material movement into and out of the cell
Cytoplasm
site of metabolic processes of the cell; stores nutrients and dissolved solutes
Nucleus
acts as a cell control center, controls all genetic information (DNA), site of ribosome subunit assembly
Mitochondria
synthesizes most ATP during cellular respiration, powerhouses of the cell
Endoplasmicreticulum (ER)
both smooth and rough
Smooth: synthesizes lipids, metabolizes carbohydrates, detoxifies drugs and alcohol
Rough: synthesizes proteins for secretion, new proteins for the plasma membrane and lysosome enzymes, transports and stores molecules
Golgi Apparatus
modifies, packages, and sorts newly synthesized proteins for secretion, inclusion in new plasma membrane or lysosomal enzyme synthesis
Cytoskeleton
provides structural support, facilitates cytoplasmic streaming organelle and cellular motility, transport of materials and chromosomal movement in cell division
Lysosomes
digest materials or microbes ingested by the cell; remove old/damaged organelles -- then self destruct
