why are cells so small?

Because the smaller the cell, or the smaller the surface area to volume, the more efficient the cell becomes.

All cells contain these things

Cell membrane, genetic material, cytosol, and ribosomes.

Cell membrane

controls what entered/leaves the cell

Genetic material

DNA - responsible for storing hereditary info

Linear genetic material is called

chromatin

circular genetic material is named

plasmid

Nucleus

contaisn most nucleic acids, surrounded by "lamina"

Nucleolus

in the nucleus, contains RNA

Endoplasmic Reticulum

network of tubes and flattened sacs; connects w/ nuclear membrane

Rough ER

Makes proteins that leave the cell

Smooth ER

makes fats and sugars

Golgi Apparatus

flattened sacs (cisternae); stores and packages products of cell

Lysosome

contains enzymes for molecular digestion.

Responsible for autophagy (breaking down damaged organelle)

Vacuole

Stores pigments, poisons, water and nutrients

Mitochondria

Chemical energy conversion

**has own DNA

Peroxisome

enzymes that produce H202 and its hydrolysis

chloroplast

stores pigment for photsynthesis

**contains own DNA

cell wall

tough, permeable out covering made of cellulose

central vacuole

stores water + helps maintain structure

surrounded by tonoplast
