Define Bony Orbit

Cone shaped structure that serves to surround and protect the eyeball.

How many bones make up the orbit?

7 bones

What are the 7 bones that make up the orbit?

1. Frontal

2. Sphenoid

3. Maxillary

4. Lacrimal

5. Zygoma

6. Ethmoid

7. Palatine

Irregular, spherical shaped structure in the bony orbit.

Globe of the Orbit

Small cavity anterior to the lens.

Anterior Compartment of Globe

What is the anterior compartment filled with?

Aqueous Humor

What surrounds the larger posterior compartment of the globe?

Retina

Jelly-like substance within the posterior compartment of the globe.

Vitreous Humor

Gland located in the superolateral portion of the orbit.

Lacrimal Gland

Six Major Muscles of the Orbit

1. Superior rectus

2. Inferior rectus

3. Medial rectus

4. Lateral rectus

5. Superior oblique

6. Inferior oblique

Superior Rectus Function

Elevates eye.

Inferior Rectus Function

Depresses eye.

Medial Rectus Function

Adducts eye.

Lateral Rectus Function

Abducts eye.

Superior Oblique Function

Depresses eye in adduction.

Inferior Oblique Function

Elevates eye in adduction.

The nerve of sight. Originates at the posterior surface of the globe and courses posteromedially to exit the orbit through the optic canal.

Optic Nerve

Artery that runs inferior to the optic nerve but crosses over the nerve to supply the globe.

Ophthalmic Artery

Vein that originates from the medial orbit and courses below the superior rectus muscle.

Superior Ophthalmic Vein

Surrounds the muscular and vascular structures within the orbit. Allows visualization of structures in images.

Retro-orbital Fat

The decussation of the medial fibers.

Optic Chiasm
