Predictive value
The ability of a diagnostic test to accurately measure both the presence or absence of a disease.
Compare and Contrast:

Efficacy VS Effectiveness
EFFICACY:
* purpose is to test if the agent or treatment actually works.
*conducted on population that is susceptible to the disease/condition being studied.
-susceptibility could be based on age, gender, race, SES, location
*very controlled experiment
- control group, double blind
- application of agent/Tx is applied properly (either by participant or professional) & exactly the same every time
- supervised by a professional
*EXAMPLE:
Efficacy trial of a power toothbrush to reduce gingivitis in a sample of people w/gingivitis. Supervised to ensure appropriate usage of power toothbrush.
EFFECTIVENESS:
*purpose is to test the way an agent/tx regimen works in EVERYDAY conditions, AFTER efficacy trial of agent/tx has been established.
*broad sample
*less controlled
EXAMPLE:
The power toothbrush prooves to be effective in the tx of gingivitis, but how effective is the power toothbrush really used with NOT under supervision?
