Mydriatic-Cycloplegics

Atropine, cyclogyl, mydriacyl

Action

Dilate pupil and relax ciliary muscle

Uses of atropine, cyclogyl, mydriacyl

Eye exams and acute iritis

Side effects of atropine, cyclogyl, and mydriacyl

Headache, blurred vision, dry mouth, tachycardia

Teach patients using atropine, cyclogyl, and mydriacyl

Contraindicated if patient has glaucoma, it increases intraocular pressure.

Wear dark glasses while eyes are dilated

Meds to treat glaucoma : Miotics: pilocarpine (isopto carpine), carbochol (carbacel)

Action

Reduce intraocular pressure by constricting the pupil

Side effects of pilocarpine (isopto carpine), carbochol (carbacel)

Headache, hypotension, bronchoconstriction, decreased vision in poor light, blurred vision (initially)

Teach patients taking pilocarpine and carbochol

Avoid atropine meds, increased intraocular pressure

Increase lighting in home

Avoid activities like driving, until blurred vision gone

Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: acetazolamide (diamox), given p o, dorzolamide (trusopt) drops

Action

Decreases production of aqueous humor, so decreases ocular pressure

Side effects of diamox and trusopt

Blurred vision, pulmonary edema, lethargy, weakness, depression, g I symptoms, Hypokalemia and lacrimation (the flow of tears)

Interventions of diamox and trusopt

Assess mental status before repeating dose

Monitor for Hypokalemia
