Traditional Legitimacy
Legitimacy that certain aspects of politics are to be accepted because they have been accepted over a long period of time. *Built by habit and custom over time, stressing history, strongly institutionalized
Charismatic Legitimacy
The power of ideas or the "gift of grace". Embodied by one individual who can move the public through these ideas and the manner in which one presents them. *Built on the force of ideas and the presence of the leader; weakly institutionalized
Rational legal Legitimacy
Not based on history or rituals or on the force of ideas, but rather on a system of laws and procedures that are highly institutionalized. *Built on rules and procedures and the offices that create and enforce those rules; strongly institutionalized
Federalism
Significant powers that control specific territory within the country.
Unitary State
Invests most political power at the national level with limited local authority.
Strong States
Defend their territory, make and enforce rules, collect taxes and manage the economy
Weak States
Not well institutionalized and lack authority and legitimacy.
Failed States
The states that became so weak that they collapse, resulting in a complete loss of power; anarchy and violence go off as order breaks down.
Capacity
The ability of the state to wield power
Autonomy
The ability of the state to wield its power independently of the public.
