What is Design for Manufacturing (DFM)?
To design a product w/ the organization's manufacturing capabilities in mind.
What is the Over-The-Wall Approach?
Designers create idea for product and throw the idea over to the manufacturer; there are communication problems in this method.
What is Concurrent Engineering?
Designers and Manufacturers work together to create a product.
Is Over-The-Wall or Concurrent Engineering better?
Concurrent Engineering b/c you get the problems out of the way early = less expensive.
Who do you build the product for? (3 people)
1.) Customers
2.) People who repair, recycle, get rid of it. 3.) Manufacturers |
What are the stages in the manufacturing PLC?
1.) Incubation
2.) Growth 3.) Maturity 4.) Saturation (of market) 5.) Decline |
What is standardization?
Getting rid of variety within a product so it delivers the same service and benefits to all users.
What are the 2 benefits of interchangeable parts?
1.) Less costly
2.) Easier for replacement/repair |
What is mass customization and what are the 2 tactics to mass customize?
Mass customization is producing standard goods/services, but having some customization in the final product.
2 Tactics: 1.) Delayed Differentiation 2.) Modular Design |
What is Delayed Differentiation and what company does it?
Delayed Differentiation is producing a product but not completing it until the customer has added it's customization.
ex: Suit makers that make everything but allow customers to choose length, cuffs or no cuffs etc. |
What is Modular Design and what company does it?
Having component parts grouped together so customers can swap out certain components.
ex: Dell |
What is reliability?
The ability to work under the conditions its supposed to work under.
When is the optimal level of reliability reached?
When the incremental benefit equals the incremental cost.
What is a robust design?
When a product can work in a broader range of conditions.
What is the difference between reliable and robust?
Reliable works when its supposed to, robust works when its supposed to and then some.
What are the 5 stages in the stage-gate aka Product Development Funnel?
1.) Concept generation and selection
2.) Product Design 3.) Prototype and Testing 4.) Pilot Production 5.) Manufacturing Ramp-Up & Release |
What are the 3 disadvantages of standardization?
1.) Frozen in designs even when change needs to be made
2.) Design changes are very costly. 3.) Decreased variety, so less appealing to customers. |
