A very good morning I bid to the distinguishedadjudicators, the ever so meticulous time keepers, my comrades of the opposition team, myrespectable adversaries of the government team, and members of the floor. Our motionfor today is ‘This house believes that the Olympic games are a waste ofresources'. We, the white chess pieces on this metaphorical chessboard, strongly concur that the Olympic games are indeed, a waste of resources.

Now, allow me to define our motion today, on par withOxford's Dictionary. Resources here is defined as "A stock or supply ofmoney, materials, staff, and other assets that can be drawn on by a person ororganization in order to function effectively". In a nutshell, thegovernment's standpoint is, Olympic games are a waste of assets.

Before I begin transmogrifying our arguments into ametaphorical chessboard, allow me to specify the roles of my team and I. Our2nd speaker, Donova, the bishop, will present two arguments which are___________________________and ______________________

Our 3rd speaker, Jonathan, the knight, will bypass enemylines to rebut, rebut and rebut all of the intellect but sadly misdirectedarguments of the black chess pieces of the opposition team.Rook to A5, "Thecost of building infrastructure increases debt and are worsening the status ofthe poor in the country". The cost of building an Olympic stadium is about537 million pound sterling. In April 1896, Athens, Greece, hosted the firstOlympic Games of the modern era.

And nearly lost everything in the process. The countrywas already bankrupt when it took on the competition, but the relatively newroyal family believed the games would boost its popularity. In 1924 Olympic Games, host city, Paris only garneredhalf the revenue they were expecting. In 1980, Olympic Winter games in Lake Placid, the hostcity was left 6 million dollars in debt and couldn't get aid from thegovernment, whom had already spent 90 million dollars for the Olympics.

1992, Winter Olympics, the French government spent $189million building and improving sports venues. While some the towns garneredmore tourists because of improved transportation, both during the Olympics andin the years that followed, Albertville didn't see any long-term boom. TheFrench government was left with another legacy altogether: a $67 million lossand decades of debt.In the year 2000, theSummer Olympics, the Australian Government, used 3.8 billion dollars, which athird of that, from taxpayers' money, and 8 to 10 million tourists who wereforecast to visit Sydney following the Olympics, didnt show up.

Not only did the Olympics fail to boost tourism, itwasted the taxpayer's money which can be used to actually solve the problem ofhomelessness in Australia. Finally, in 2010 Olympic Winter Games, in Canada, thecity of Vancouver, Canadian athletes managed to win 14 gold medals but, theCandian Government were left $1 billiondebt, including $730 million incurred by the Olympic Village bailout . Torecoup some of the cost, the city began marketing the Olympic Village as anenvironmentally friendly residential neighborhood, hoping to convince buyers tomove into the many condos that sat empty. They received only a tepid response.

Now, I'm not gonna quote any more countries as I believeI have clearly made my point here. Why spent hundreds of millions to build astadium that you're eventually going to either break down after a few weeks, even if you open them to the public, even in 10, 20 years, it will still failto cover up the cost of building and the maintainance. I have arrived to a conclusion where I believe thatOlympic Games are just 'commercialised bogus'.

We should all be ashamed. Industrial nations should befocusing on important issues, not patting themselves on the back all the time.People talk about getting together as a human race, but it means nothing.Poverty and world hunger still is a problem, yet no one bats an eye. The amountof unnecessary travel, and infrastructure and building that is initiated, andlater left unused is a disgrace. Humanity needs to grow up, the past centuryhas been dark, and civilisation is only getting darker. Things like theOlympics are a lie. Celebration skin deep.

Before I take my seat, allow me to once againreaffirm, reiterate, and reinforce my stand that we as the government team, strongly agree that the olympic games are a waste of resources. I now hand backover the gameboard to the opposition team.
