Diseases that can be transmitted from one person to another under certain conditions
What is direct contact?

Direct contact with the infected person such as by touching, could be as brief as touching or more complex such as sexual contact
What is indirect contact?
Touching objects with contamination on them left by another person or fluid.
What is transmission by inhalation?
Inhalation of infected drops such as those released when someone sneezes
What is transmission by puncture or needle stick?
Contamination by any needle or sharp instrument - need to follow needle safe guidelines and needleless devices.
What is contamination by transfusion?
Contamination from donated blood. Screening helps but it is never 100% secure from contamination
What is Vectorborne transmission?
A vector transfers an infection from a reservoir to a host. Such as an infected mosquito transfers west nile to patient via bite.
What is airborne transmission?
When organisms travel on dust particles or respiratory droplets. They can travel long distances. Direct contact is not required.
What is droplet transmisson?
Infectious droplets land on surfaces from cough or sneezes or cuts. Hands then come into contact and transfer further. This can then enter the body through eyes, nose and mouth.
What is host resistance?
The ability of a host to fight off infection
What is the incubation period?
The period from infection to when the disease shows itself in the form of symptoms
What is the communicable period?
The period when a disease can be transmitted. This can be prior to the onset of signs and symtoms
What is contamination?
An object that has organisms on it is contaminated but not necessarily infected.
