Crooks

This is not his real name but he was given the name by the other ranch workers because he was kicked in the back by a horse which gave him the crooked back. Steinbeck could have also chosen this name as it could be a way of suggesting that crooks' back is bent physically because he was kicked by a horse but socially and mentally he is carrying the weight of racism on his back as well.

His bunk was a long box filled with straw

This indicates that crooks lives in a room where he is treated like an animal this could be due to the fact that the men put him near the animals and this shows that they treat him like an animal and a second class citizen because he is black.

S'pose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go in the bunk house because you were black.

This displays his loneliness and isolation and this is all because he is black and he is frustrated by all the racist comments he has to take from all the men.

Stable buck

This quote is a derogatory term which is used to describe am African American which is similar to ******

He had books

This shows he is intelligent and reads books in his spare time.

Why it's just a ****** saying it

This shows that he knows he is somewhat inferior to the other ranch men because he is black and the other men on the ranch are white and so he thinks that people won't take his word over a white persons word.

Every damn one of them has a little place of land in his head

This displays that he has seen that other men had a dream in their heads but he hasn't seen a man who has actually fulfilled his dream. He could be seen to have been more content with his life without a dream than George and Lennie as they are constantly trying to get to a point where they can fulfill their dreams.
