When did serialism begin?
Approximately 20th century.
What is serialism?
A musical composition that uses 12 notes of the chromatic scale in an order.

What does prime mean?
The notes of the tone row played in order e.g. 1-12.
What does retrograde mean?
Playing the tone row backwards.
What does inversion mean?
Playing the tone row upside down (mirrored).

Playing the tone row backwards upside-down.

Playing the tone row upside down backwards.
What does transpose mean?
Changing the strating note of a musical idea/phrase. e.g. transposed -3.
