Character Set
- The symbols that a computer can recognize and use
- Each symbol is distinguishable from others
- E.g. ASCII, UNICODE, EBCDIC
Applications that need character sets of different sizes
- Word processing
- ATM terminals, they use 10 digits + 6 command codes with 4 bits per character
How codes are used to represent different character sets
- Each required character is given a unique binary code
- The more characters, the more bits in each code
- The number of bits that represent the code establish the size of a byte
- Number of characters tend to be to the power of 2
- Allows keys to have different characters
