APH

Bleeding from or into the genital tract after the 22nd week of gestation before the birth of the baby. Which can adversely affect the condition of the mother.

Placenta Previa

Aph def + when the placenta is situated partially or completely over the lower uterine segment, over and adjacent to the internal os.

Abruptio Placenta

Type of APH where bleeding occurs due to premature separation of the placenta.

PPH

Any amount of bleeding from or into the genital tract following birth of the baby upto the end of puerperium which adversely affects the condition of the mother evidenced by rise in pulse and fall in blood pressure.

Rupture of Uterus

Disruption in the continuity of all the uterine layers (endo/myo/parametrium) any time beyond 28weeks of pregnancy.

Prolonged Labor

Labor is said to be prolonged when the combined duration of first and second stage is more than the arbitrary time limit of 18 hours

Obstructed Labor

Labor where in spite of good uterine contractions, the progressive descent of the presenting part is arrested due to mechanical obstruction.

Inversion of Uterus

It is an extremely rare but life threatening complication of third stage in which the uterus is turned inside out completely or partially.

Preterm Labor

One where the labor starts before the 37th completed week, counting from the first day of the LMP

PROM

Spontaneous rupture of the membranes any time beyond 22nd week of pregnancy but before the onset of labor.

Maternal Death

Death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of the termination of pregnancy irrespective of the duration and site of pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management but not from accidental or incidental cause.

Subinvolution

When the involution is retarded or impaired.

Puerperal Sepsis

Infection of the genital tract which occurs as a complication of delivery.

Puerperal Pyrexia

A rise of temperature reaching a 100.4°F(38°C) or more(measured orally) on two separate occasions at 24 hours apart (excluding the first 24hours) within the first 10 days following delivery.

Normal Puerperium

Period following childbirth during which the body tissues, specially the pelvic organs revert back approximately to the prepregnant state both anatomically and physiologically.

Post Natal Care

Systematic examination of the mother and the baby and appropriate advice given to the mother during postpartum period.

Maternal Mortality Rate

Indicates the number of maternal deaths divided by the number of women of reproductive age (15-49). It is expressed per 100000 women of reproductive ave per year.

Perinatal Mortality

Deaths among fetuses weighing 1000 grams or more at birth( 28 weeks) who die before or during delivery or within the first 7 days of delivery.



Rate is expressed in terms of such deaths per 1000 total births.

Neonatal Death

Death of the infant within 28 days after birth.

Shock

Defined as a state of circulatory inadequacy with poor tissue perfusion resulting in generalised cellular hypoxia.

High Risk Pregnancy

Defined as one which is complicated by factor or factors that adversely affects pregnancy outcome - maternal or perinatal or both.

Placenta

Circular disc with a diameter of 15-20 cm and 3cm of thickness in the centre. Spongy. And weighs 500grams. It has two surfaces, fetal and maternal.

Placental Barrier

A partition between the fetal and maternal circulation. Consisting of :


1. Maternal blood


2. Syncytiotrophoblast


3. Cytotrophoblast


4. Basement Membrane


5. CT of villius


6. Endothelium and basement membrane


7. Fetal blood.

ANC

Systematic supervision, examination and advice of a woman during pregnancy.

Labour

Series of events that occurs in the genital organs in an effort to expel the viable products of conception from the womb through the vulva into the outer world.

Normal Labor

When labour is 1) Spontaneous in onset and at term 2) Vertex in position 3) without undue prolongation 4) natural termination with minimal aids 5) without having complications affecting the health of the mother or the baby.
