Infant mortality rate
number of deaths of infants under 1 year of age per 1000 live births in a given population
Maternal mortality rate
the number of maternal deaths from any cause during the pregnancy cycle per 100,000 live births
Birth rate
number of live births per 1000 population
Gestation
period of intrauterine development from conception through birth; pregnancy. The number of weeks since the last day of the menstrual period.
Nageles rule
a method of determining the estimated DOB (EDB): after obtaining the first day of the last menstrual period, subtract three months and add 7 days
EDC or EDD
estimated date of confinement or estimated "due date"
Antepartum
time between conception and the onset of labor, usu used to describe the period during which a woman is pregnant
Intrapartum
the time from the onset of true labor until the birth of the infant and delivery of the placenta
Postpartum
after childbirth or delivery, time form birth until the womans body returns to an essentially pre preg condition, 6 weeks.
Perinatal
pertaining to the time and process of giving birt or being born, 20 wks gestation until 28 days after birth
Labor
the process by which a the fetus is expelled from the maternal uterus. Also called child birth, confinement, or parturition
Gravida
any pregnancy, regardless of duration, including present pregnancy ( Miscarriages count)
Para
a woman who has born offspring who have reached the age of viability, birth after 20 weeks gestation regadless of whether the infant is born alive or dead. Each delivery is one birth experience (twins=1)
Nullipara
A woman who has notdelivered a viable fetus
Primipara
a woman who has given birth to her 1st child (past point of viability), whether or not tht child is living or was alive at birth.
Multipara
wman who has had more than one pregnancy in which the fetus was viable.
Abortion
Loss of preg before the fetus is viable outside teh uterus; miscarriage. Birth tht occours before the end of the 20 weeks gestation.
Stillbirth
the delivery of a dead infant after 20 weeks gestation.
Premature or preterm labor
labor occouring between 20 and 38 wks of pregnancy.
Prematurity
born before 38 wks gestation
postterm
born after 42 wks gestation
Viable
capable of growing , developing, and otherwise sustaining life, such as a normal human fetus at 24 weeks gestation.
