What is the role of hCG in pregnancy?
This hormone stimulates progesterone and estrogen production by the corpus luteum to maintain the pregnancy until the placenta is developed sufficiently to assume that function.
What is human placental lactogen?
An antagonist of insulin; it increases the amount of circulating free fatty acids for maternal metabolic needs and decreases maternal metabolism of glucose to favor fetal growth.
What is estrogen's role during pregnancy?
Stimulates uterine development to provide a suitable environment for the fetus. It also helps the breasts ductal system development in preparation for lactation.
What is the role of relaxin?
Inhibits uterine activity, diminishes the strengthening of uterine contractions, aids in the softening of the cervix.
What role do prostaglandins play in pregnancy?
may be responsible for maintaining reduced placental vascular resistance.

-Decreased prostaglandin levels may contribute to preeclampsia-eclampsia.

-May also play a role in the complex biochemistry that initiates labor.
What are presumative signs of pregnancy?
subjective findings, suggestive, but not diagnostic of pregnancy

 breast enlargement and tenderness
 amenorrhea
 fatigue
 urinary frequency
 nausea/vomiting
 quickening
What are objective (probable) signs of pregnancy?
objective findings, more suggestive of, but not yet diagnostic of pregnancy

 Goodell’s sign--softening of the cervix
 Chadwick’s sign--bluish mucous membranes of vagina, cervix, and vulva
 Hegar’s sign--softening of lower uterine segment
 uterine enlargement
 darkening of pigmentation on face, breasts, and stomach
 Ballottement-sudden tap on cervix may case fetus to rise in amniotic sac and then rebound
 positive pregnancy test
 Braxton-Hicks contraction--regular, painless contractions
What is Chadwick's sign?
Bluish mucous membranes of vagina, cervix and vulva.
What is Goodell's sign?
Softening of cervix.
What is Hegar's sign?
Softening of lower segment of uterus.
What are positive signs of pregnancy?
signs emanating from fetus and noted by health care worker

 observation of fetus on ultrasound
 fetal heart tones
 observed fetal movement
What is GTPAL?
G = # of pregnancies
T = # of full-term births
P = # of preterm births
A = # of abortions (spontaneous or induced)
L = # of living children
What is Naegal's rule?
First day of last menstrual period, minus 3 months plus 7 days.
What is Leopald's manuever?
systematic palpation of the abdomen to determine fetal presentation-position, degree of fetal descent into pelvis, uterine contours
What does Coomb's test check?
Rh antibodies
