A maternal assessment of fetal movement by counting fetal movements in a period of time to identify potentially hypoxic fetuses
Fetal Movement Counts or Kick Counts
The use of high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of an organ or tissue.
Ultrasonography
Antepartum fetal assessment test used to assess fetal well being; FHR is monitored for 2 accelerations in 20 minutes; accelerations indicate adequate fetal oxygenation
Non-Stress Test (NST)
Diagnostic procedure in which a needle is inserted through the maternal abdominal wall into the uterine cavity to obtain amniotic fluid
Amniocentesis
The removal of fetal blood from the umbilical cord for fetal blood sampling; also known as cordocentesis
Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling (PUBS)
Aspiration of a small amount of placental tissue (chorion) for chromosomal, metabolic, or DNA testing.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
Tests that help identify a particular disease or provide information which aids in the making of a diagnosis
Diagnostic Tests
A test designed to identify those who are NOT affected by a disease or abnormality
Screening Test
A glycoprotein produced by the fetus used for assessing the levels of this protein in the maternal blood as a screening tool for certain developmental defects in the fetus such as fetal neural tube defects (NTDs) & ventral abdominal wall defects
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)
Adds inhibin-A to the triple marker screen to increase detection of trisomy 21 to 80%
Quad Screen
A screening test that combines all three chemical markers: 1) Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), 2) human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), 3) Estriol levels; to determine some trisomies & neural tube defects
Triple Marker Screen
Assess the rate and volume of blood flow through placenta and umbilical cord vessels using ultrasound
Doppler Ultrasound Blood Flow Assessment OR (in book) Umbilical Artery Doppler Flow
A screening tool used to assess fetal well-being with EFM in women with a nonreactive NST at term gestation
Contraction Stress Test
A screening tool that uses auditory stimulation (using an artificial larynx) to assess fetal well-being with EFM when NST is non-reactive.
Vibroacoustic Stimulation
A screening tool that measures the volume of amniotic fluid with ultrasound to assess fetal well-being and placental function.
Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)
Decreased amounts of amniotic fluid during pregnancy (< 500 mL @ term or 50% reduction of normal amounts)
Oligohydramnios
Increased amounts of amniotic fluid (1,500 - 2,000 mL)
Polyhydramnios
