Oleoresin

an organic, waxy, and oily liquid which is insoluble in water

Capsicum

genus name encompassing 20 species and approximately 300 different varieties of plants producing fleshy vegetable pods. The capsicum genus produces pepper plants including paprika and chilies, but not black pepper.

Capsaicin

A colorless, crystalline, and bitter compound present and found only in capsicum; no other plant. This is the ingredient that produces the burning sensation and inflammation of the mucous membranes.

Cayenne Pepper

A pepper named for the city of Cayenne in French Guiana. It is the OC from this plant that is used to produce defensive aerosols.

Hexane

An organic solvent that is run through dried, ground peppers. The resulting liquid is put through another process to remove the solvent. The remaining liquid OC consists of a vegetable oil, containing coloring agents and capsaicanoids.

Oleoresin Capsicum

A concentrated essence of hot peppers that is not synthetic, but a natural food product made by an extraction method incorporating techniques like the process for making coffee.

Stream

Provides a target-specific, strong concentrated stream to allow for a greater standoff distance

Evaporating Fog

The delivery of OC in extremely small, aerosolized particles. These particles dissipate quickly as the liquid propellant boils off and evaporates into the air

OC Selection Criteria

•Safety

•Effectiveness

•Delivery System

•Non-persistent

•Safety Top

Canister (mk.3)

The aluminum container that holds the solution

Actuator/trigger (mk.3)

Depressed to deliver the OC solution

Cover (mk.3)

Protects the actuator from accidental discharge

Nozzle (mk.3)

Allows a constant amount of liquid formula to exit when the actuator is depressed

Cap (mk.3)

Post the cover and actuator on the can/valve assembly

Barrier Bag System

Contains the OC solution, and when compressed forces the OC solution from the canister through the valve

Propellant (mk.3)

A chemical substance or pressurized gas that is used to create movement of a fluid. The first defense OC stream canister utilizes compressed air

Carrier (mk.3)

Liquid chemicals used to dissolve and dilute OC solutions. The carrier should evaporate quickly and leave little or no residue

Effective Range of Mk-3

Approximately 3-12 feet in still air

Effective Range of Mk-4

Approximately 8-10 feet in still air

Effective Range of Mk-9

Approximately 25-30 feet in still air

Propellant (Mk-4/9)

A chemical substance or pressurized gas that is used to create movement of a fluid. The Sabre Phantom Canister utilizes HFC 134a.

Steps for Decontamination of a Person Exposed to OC

1. Remove the exposed subject from the contaminated area

2. Flush the face with copious amounts of cool water; Force the eyes open and continue to flush with cool water

3. If burning persists, wash the exposed area with soap and water

4. If burning persists further, use ice to relieve pain

Decontamination of Areas Exposed to OC

1. Ventilate the area to introduce fresh air and clear the Airborne OC

2. Open doors and windows. Use fans, if possible, to facilitate air circulation

3. Wash exposed surfaces with soap and water or a damp cloth using commercially available detergents

4. Clothing and other Fabrics can be cleaned in their usual manner
