What is nutrition?

The process of feeding in order to gain energy and nutrients.

Define the term diet.

The consumption of food

What is a balanced diet.

A diet containing the correct proportion of food from all the food groups.

What conditions affect energy requirement?

Age, gender, occupation and lifestyle.

Define the term metabolism.

The sum of all chemical reactions taking place in the body.

Malnutrition

Bad nutrition which included any inappropriate eating habit such as overfeeding or under feeding ( over/under - nutrition).

E.P.M./P.E.M. - Protein Energy Malnutrition

Caused by a diet lacking sufficient protein.


Signs of this malnutrition include reduced growth, excessive fatigue, delays in thinking and learning and hair loss.

List 3 disorders from the group which P.E.M. applies to.

Marasmus, Kwashiorkor and intermediate states of Marasmus - Kwashiorkor.

Micro - nutrients

Nutrients required in smaller quantities which are small simple and inorganic( i.e. vitamins and minerals)


Examples: Vitamin A, B (1-12), C, D, E, K


Minerals: Iodine, Iron, Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorus and


Magnesium

Macro - nutrients (opposite of micro - nutrients

Nutrients required in larger amounts which are essential for growth, development and energy production. They are usually large, complex and organic
