What is PID?
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
It causes inflammation in the uterus, fallopian tubes or other reproductive organs. It is complicated by STI's such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. It can cause infertility.
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is an STI that is caused by the bacteria chlamydia tachomatis. It usually has no symptoms but if there are some, it is discharge, fever, nausea,etc. both men and women can get it.
What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is an STI that is caused by a type of bacteria that can grow in warm moist areas in the reproductive tract like the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes.Also do not have any symptoms usually, but when do, may have burning when going pee, discharge, etc.
Endometriosis
The presence of endometrial tissue in abnormal places such as deep within the uterine wall, ovaries. (a build up during menstrual cycles.) 30%-40% of women.
Poly-cystic Ovary Syndrome
several cysts in ovary. increased levels of androgens, may have irregular periods or none.
Causes: genetics, overweight/insulin, insulin stimulating androgen production.
Symptoms:infertile, increase hair on body, acne, obesity/abdominal fat, type 2 diabetes, etc.
Treatments: education and diagnosis, loss of 10% of body wt helps regulates cycles,
Pre-Menstrual syndrome
85% of women
A condition occurring among women of reproductive age that includes a group of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms with onset in the luteual phase and subsiding w/ menstrual bleeding.
Symptoms: acne, tiredness, backaches, mood swings, breast tenderness, headache etc.
Prevention: exercise daily, avoid junk food, eat whole foods, adequate carb intake, avoid caffeine and alcohol.
Prostaglandins
a group of physiologically active substances derived from the essential fatty acids. they perform such functions as contraction or dilation of blood vessels and stimulation of smooth muscles and the uterus.
Celiac disease
autoimmune disease that occurs in people w/ a genetic susceptability to the protein gliadin found in gluten component of wheat, rye, and barley.
Causes: malabsorption and flattening of intestinal linging
Epigentics
refers to heritable changes in phenotype or gene expression caused by covalent attachment of chemical groups to DNA, histone protiens.
DNA sequence does not change.
Diet, smoking, pesticides, etc. can change the expression of the genes.
