ORAL HYGIENE
1 Perform hand hygiene. Apply disposable gloves. |
2. Inspect integrity of client’s lips, teeth, buccal
mucosa, gums, palate, and tongue. |

11. Raise bed to comfortable working position. Raise head of bed (if allowed) and lower side rail. Move client, or help client move closer. The client can also be in a side-lying position.

12. Place towel over client’s chest.

13. Apply gloves.

14. Apply toothpaste to toothbrush while holding brush over emesis basin. Pour small
amount of water over toothpaste. |

15. Hold toothbrush bristles at a 45-degree angle to client’s gumline. Brush inner and outer surfaces of client’s upper and lower teeth. Clean biting surfaces of teeth, and brush sides of teeth.

16. Have client hold brush at a 45-degree angle and lightly brush over surface and sides of
tongue. Instruct client to avoid initiating gag reflex |

17. Allow client to rinse mouth thoroughly.

18. Allow client to gargle to rinse mouth with
mouthwash as desired. |

19. Assist in wiping client’s mouth.
|
20. Allow client to floss.
|
|
21. Allow client to rinse mouth thoroughly with cool water and spit into emesis basin. Assist in wiping client’s mouth.

22. Assist client to a comfortable position, remove emesis basin and bedside table, raise side rail, and lower bed to original position.
|
|
23. Wipe off overbed table. Discard soiled linens and paper towels in appropriate containers. Remove and dispose of soiled gloves. Return equipment to proper place.

24. Perform hand hygiene.
|
|
25. Ask client if any area of the oral cavity
feels uncomfortable or irritated. |
26. Apply gloves and inspect condition of
client’s oral cavity. |

27. Ask client to describe proper oral hygiene
techniques. |
28. Observe client brushing his or her teeth.
|
