What is the advantage to doing a whole body scan with PET/CT?
it can be done in 10 min
what kind of compounds are used? |
carbon 11
PET RP's have what in common?
They are short lived and are radioactive isotopes of elements encountered in nature and all produced in cyclotron.
Give 4 examples? |
1. O15 (t1/2= 2 min)
2. C11 (t1/2 = 20 min) 3.N13 (t1/2 = 10 min) 4. F18 (t1/2 = 110 min) |

Why is Rubidiium 82 good for cardiac perfusion studies?
it is similar to potassium and can enter heart muscle the same way
Why does the Rubidium generator need to be on site for cardiac imaging and how does it work?
It is generated from Sr82 of which Rb is the daughter and it has a half life of 1.27 min. so the patient has to be hooked up via IV to do study.
What is the disadvantage/advantage of this? |
Cannot do physical stress but can do stress rest back to back do to short half life
When considering shielding for PET scanners what is the difference from Tc?
Lead required to shield .511 MeV gamma’s is more than 13 times that
of 140 KeV What are the half layer value comparisons? |
Tc-99m 0.3 mm (< 1/64”)
F – 18 4.1 mm (5/32”) |
What is the most commonly used PET RP?
FDG, which is an analog of glucose
what is the dosage and what is the scan used for? |
between 8-20 mCi,avg is 10-15
used to locate tumors and metastasis |
What interferes with the uptake of FDG and what needs to be tested to prevent this interference?
High serum glucose, needs to be tested, pt should fast and be <200
Why is the pt scanned from mandible to mid-thigh? |
brain is too hot since is runs purely on glucose
When doing a muscle scan what should the patient avoid in order to get a good scan?
Vigorous exercise 48 hrs prior to exam, even foot tapping and gum chewing can give a false positive!
