What is a peripheral IV catheter used for?
deliver medications, fluid therapy, nutrition and frequent blood sampling
(this is the only one a nuclear medicine tech can start)
What is a central venous catheter and what is it used for?
sterile tube inserted into central circulation. same uses as peripheral but for more extended use and for when peripheral is difficult to achieve. also allows for monitoring BP
where is it placed?
inserted at jugular vein and terminates at superior vena cava or right atrium
What is a PICC catheter?
what is a single and multi lumen catheters?
types of Central venous catheters. PICC is peripherial inserted central catheter and single lumen is one line and multi is more than one that branch off outside of skin
what are some other central venous catheters?
Groshong, Hickman, Broviac and Hickman/Broviac
What is an "A" line and what is it used for?
An arterial line, a catheter inserted into an artery that allows for monitoring of real time BP and blood gases, not for fluid therapy

radial, brachial, femoral or carotid artieries
What is a chemotherapy port?
device implanted under the skin, usually the chest, that is connected to a central vein. it is used to administer medications
