Herod the Great
Mat. 2; Lk 1 - King of Jews udring Jesus' birth. King whom Magai spoked to. Ordered deaths of children in Bethlehem.
Herod Antipas
Mt. 14; Lk. 3, 9, 13, 23; Jailed and killed John the Baptist. Saw Jesus during trial (lk 23). "The fox" (Lk 13). aka The Tetrarch
Pharisees
Gospels, esp. Mt 23 - Small (6,000 adherents) but influential. Considered themselves true Israel. Interpreted 'oral' law of Moses (Mt. 5:20). Belief: balance human merit and divine grace, soul is imperishable and there will be a resurrection; simple living; high view of human capacity. Life of faith was obedience.
Sadducees
Gospels, esp Mk 12. - Strong belief in biblical authority, opposed to oral trad. of Pharisees. Human agency stressed. Anti-supernatural; denied resurrection and angels. Cooperated with Roamns. Priestly, aristocratic and unpopular with the people.
Zealots
Instigators of revolt against Rome in 67 AD. Argued that it was unlawful to pay taxes to Roman.
Samaritans
Mixed marriages and syncretistic religon and culture. Built replica of temple on Mt. Gerizim dedicated to Zeus Hellenios. Pro-Rome and Herod.
Proselytes and God-fearers
Proselytes were converts: circumcised, baptized and temple offering. God-feares were not circ. but practiced Jewish standards and piety, attended synagogue.
Cynicism
Suffering had merit. Four distanct elements in the nature of universes: 1. Pessimistic worldview, 2. Wise one is part of minority. 3. Tendency to masochism. 4. Suffering is part of nature and beneficial.
Stoicism
Divine logos permeated and controlled universe. Deterministic. Suffering was positive. 1. Physics, embodiment of nonmaterial force; 2. Logic, 3. Ethics
Epicureans
Advocated pure morality. Define pleasure as absence of pain, avoidance of trouble. Denied divine punishment. Materialistic

Walked on water. Led gospel proclamation to Jews. Cornelius (Acts 10).
Cornelius
Centurion and devout man. Acts 10 - Vision of angel told him to call Peter from Joppa. Believed, HS on household and all were baptized. Confirmed that gospel should go to Gentiles.
Barnabas
Acts 4, 11, 13-15 - Also know as Joseph from Cypress. Levite who sold field (Acts 4). Ministered in Antioch, Sent with by church of Antioch on mission to Gentiles. Differed w/ Paul over John Mark.
Stephen
Acts 6, 7 - Chose as one of the serve tables in Jerusalem. Full of spirit and Wisdom. Stoned to death, first recorded martyr.
Paul
Acts 7, 9, 13-28 - Roman citizen (b. in Tarsus). Ed. as Ph. under Gamaliel. 3 missionary journeys. Imprisoned and sent to Rome.
Timothy
Acts 16-18; 1 COr. 4, 16; Ph 2; 1-2 Tim. - Native of Lystra. Joined Paul on 2nd missionary journey. Carried on ministry in Macedonia, Ephesus and Corinth.
James (the Just)
Mt. 13, Acts 12, 15, James - Brother of Jesus who did not believe at first. Saw Jesus raised. Presided over Jer. council and was stoned and martyred.
