The Menenges

1 - DURA MATER - tough and protective

2 - ARACHNOID MATER - blood supply

3 - PIA MATER - layer of capilliaries stuck to brain surface

Cerebro-Spinal Fluid (CSF)

- circulates in sub-arachnoid space and through ventricle system of the brain

- any blockage in the circulation of CSF will cause pressure to build up - can lead to hydrocephaly

- pressue should be between 3 -15 mmHg

Blood supply to the brain:

- via L and R carotid arteries and Circle of Willis

- hemmorage is most likely to occur where one vessel joins another (weak point)

- brain does not come into contact with blood

- nutrients passed from blood to CSF at CHOROID PLEXUS

3 types of intracranial bleeds:

1 - blood of fluid accumulates and increases intracranial pressure (ICP)

2 - Ischemic stroke - a blood clot blocks blood flow to an area of the brain

3 - Hemmoragic stroke - vessel ruptures and causes bleeding inside/around brain tissue
