What is The Portfiriato and when when did it occur?
The Portfiriato is the time (1877- 1910) period in which Jose Diaz ruled Mexico. Diaz ruled with an iron fist and provided the type of central stability needed, Increase in national investment, Bulk of infrastructure built during this time, suppression the rights of workers and peasants (who basically built the structure of Mexico). Vast economic expansion but with a great deal of sacrifice.
What happened under the rule of Jose Diaz concerning the economy and the middle class?
The economy expanded greatly, but at the expense of individual and political freedoms. The middle class began to make money, leading them to want more say in the government so they can keep the money they were earning.
What important event occurred in Mexico in 1910?
The Portfiriato caused struggle. Jose Diaz said he'd step down from power in order to allow institutions to grow on their own, however, instead of doing so, he took his position back. This inevitably caused a revolt where Diaz was overthrown.
