What are the 2 types of passive immunity?
Natural passive and Artificial passive
What is are 2 examples of natural passive immunity?
Maternal IgG antibodies pass through the placenta and give the child protection for 1-3 months
Breast feeding: Transfers antibodies (IgG and IgA) and it can hlep protect the child fro a longer period of time.
Why shouldn't newborns be sick?
They acquire antibodies from the mother through natural passive immunity (IgG) antibodies
What is contained in breast milk, why should women breast feed their babies, what type of immunity do babies gain from this?
Colostrum, Breast feeding transfers antibodies (IgG and IgA and it can help protect the hcild fro a longer period of time, natural passive
What are some of the benefits of breast feeding to the baby?
decreases the incidence of infant ear infections, allergies, diarrhea, and bacterial memingitis. It may protect against childhood lymphoma, SIDS and diabetes

antibodies created to bind to protein snake venom, artificial passive antibodies
What is pooled serum from human donors that contain antibodies?
gamma globulin
What can typically prevent the virus obtained by a helthcare worker who suffers an accidental needle stick from a patient infected with the hepatitis virus? What is the treatment an example of?
Immediate treatment with a gamma-globulin injection (along with simultaneous vaccination against the virus), ARTIFICIAL PASSIVE IMMUNITY
What are 3 examples of artificial passive immunity?>
Rhogam
serum injected into a patient with hepatitis exposure
antivenin
What are signaling molecules produced by? What are these molecules called?
cytokines, produced by T lympohcytes
What is being investigatesd as a possible adjunct (or added on) therapy for cancer and aids? What else has been used for this purpose?
