Passing Tones
go from chord to chord with tone inbetween
-has to be a step
-same direction (up line or down line)
-has to be in the melodic line
Passing tones
1. unaccented passing tone
-the nonharmonic tone happens after the chord has struck
Passing tones
2.accented passing tone
-when chord sticks, dissonant note happens
Neighboring Tones
-start on a chord tone
-move down or up a step
-then return back to the same note

extra: as long as notes are same it doesn't matter if chord is same
double upper neighbor
double lower neighbor
two voices do the same neighboring tone relationship at the same time.
Appoggiatura (APP)
-start on chord tone
-skip up to non-chord tone
-resolve to a chord tone (not necessarily to same chord)
Escape tone (ET)
-start on chord tone
-move up a step to non harmonic tone
-leap to a chord tone
Suspension
A suspension occurs when the harmony shifts from one chord to another, but one or more notes of the first chord are temporarily held over into the second in which they are nonchord tones before resolving to a chord tone

Three parts:
1. set-up - (harmonic tone/note in chord)
2. suspension- hold same note over to different chord (nonharmonic in this new chord)
3.Resolution- note resolves down a step
3. Resolution
How to identify Number for suspension
-look at last two chords
-go from bass note to its top for first number
-then from bass note to the resolved tone for the second number
Retardation
A suspension that resolves up
changing tones
-starts and end on the same note
-the start and end surround two other notes that are a third apart.
-go up one step from start note to second
-down a third from second to third notes
-go up a step from third to fourth
Pedal Tone
-repeated note while different chords are happening around it
extra: sometimes consonant, not always
-related to pedal point
