What is NIV

Used in spontaneously breathing patients. Form of ventilatory support used in acute respiratory failure, COPD, sleep apnoea. Types:

- continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)

- bi-level intermittent positive airway pressure (BI-PAP)

Bi-PAP

Delivers air with the added oxygen, via a face mask by positive pressure. It delivers air pressure depending on inspiration (IPAP-inspiratory positive airway pressure) and expiration (EPAP-expiratory positive airway pressure). 2 different levels of pressure: IPAP helps with ventilation, EPAP help with exhaling gas. O2 can be added too

CPAP

Supply constant positive pressure throughout inspiration and expiration. If delivered with oxygen, it can allow a higher degree of inspired o2 compared to other masks

COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. It includes: emphysema – damage to the air sacs in the lungs. chronic bronchitis – long-term inflammation of the Airways.

The breathing problems tend to get gradually worse over time and can limit your normal activities, although treatment can help keep the condition under control
