Peter
chief apostle, one of Christ’s closest disciples; became much braver and more outspoken following Christ’s death and resurrection. Introduced idea of spreading the gospel to the gentiles after receiving revelation . Stayed in Jerusalem mostly.
James
another of the original 12 apostles (first presidency?); Herod slays him by the sword after a relatively short time following Christ’s resurrection,
John
apostle promised to not experience death, likely author of much of the Gospel of John
• James the brother of Jesus
Leader of the more Jewish Christians. Conservative. Judaizer, Bishop of Jerusalem. FOR CIRCUMCISION. (said he was always on his knees praying:)
James is the one who delivers the verdict to the council in jerusalem on the gentiles do not need to be circumcised in order to become a Christian. He does it because he is a jewish christian and it helps keep peace in the church.
Paul
well educated Pharisee, educated by Gamaliel, from Tarsus, his parents were wealthy tentmakers. early and strong opponent of Christianity, converted after seeing a vision of Christ, becomes a strong missionary (possibly an apostle, though the scriptures are unclear). Author of most of the letters in the New Testament. Short and short tempered, he was described as having a squeaky voice and bowed legs. Bounty Hunter with the Sanhedrin. His name literally means stubby. Also went by Saul. Paul I think is a common, slave name. He was a ROMAN citizen, his ace in the hole!Chameleon- citizen of three worlds. (jew-religion, Greek-culture, Roman-citizen= perfect missionary). 1st mission companions: Barnabus and John mark. 2nd mission companion: Silas. Acts- mission companion with Luke
Luke
The author of Acts. Very educated. Formerly a Physician. His Greek is exceptional. Gentile. Only one who writes a sequel. Also a historian (which means he writes what should have been said, not necessarily what was actually said.
Barnabas
Missionary companion to paul, on his first mission. They switched companions after a disputation regarding john mark(pretty sure it was john mark , who was Barnabas’ nephew. correct.) Didn’t Barnabas also sell his land in Acts 4 and gave the money to the apostles. And his name means “son of consolation” and he’s a Levite from Cyprus … if it’s the same Barnabas It is.
Silas
Pauls second companion, after barnabas. Specifically in Macedonia (Thessalonians)
John Mark
author of the Gospel of Mark, the first of the four gospels chronologically. ended his mission early and got Paul upset. Thrown off temple then stoned in 62 AD. Everyone went to his house to pray for Peter’s prison release.
Ananias
Disciple told in a vision to find Paul(Saul at the time) and restore his sight. He was afraid, but was told that Paul was a “chosen vessel”. He restored Paul’s sight and Paul was baptized (probably by Ananias since he was the disciple sent). Acts 9:10-18.
Annas
High Priest of Sanhedrin. Took a leading part in Peter and John’s trial in Acts 4. Their authority was called into question and the apostles were told to stop speaking of Jesus and were let go. (He was also the man Jesus was taken to first after he was arrested, but that’s in John. I didn’t find anything else and I couldn’t remember if we talked about him in class so please add info if you took notes on him)
Gamaliel
A Pharisee, a doctor of the law, held in honor with all the people. Paul was one of his students. Convinced the Jews to let Peter and John go in Acts 5, saying if it were the acts of men nothing would come of it. If it was of God, they didn’t want to fight against it.
Ananias and Sapphira
In Acts chapter 5 they sell their land but they don’t give the full amount of the land to the church, they try and get away with keeping it. Basically, they were dishonest and stole from the church. They both fall down dead after directly lying to Peter(and by implication, God) about it, as punishment.
Theophilus
Name means “lover of God”. Could be the patron who paid for Luke’s writings, or could mean anyone who is a lover of God. Both the Gospel of Luke and Acts are addressed to Theophilus. Luke 1:3; Acts 1:1
cornelius
First Gentile to be converted and allowed as a member into the church. God fearing Centurion? God told him in a vision to send men to look for Peter (Peter housed these gentiles) and then later Peter came to Cornelius’ house and dined together, which was even worse for a Jew to do.
Sergius Paulus
[Acts 13:6-13] In Paphos; The Proconsul(Roman governor) of Cyprus. Sent for Paul and Barnabas to hear the word of God. His attendant, Elymus attempted to thwart his conversion but failed.
• Elymus
(also called Bar-Jesus) [Acts 13] In Paphos. He is a ‘sorcerer’ and false-prophet who tries to dissuade Sergius Paulus from Christianity. Paul makes him temporarily blind, amazing Sergius and making him believe.
• Stephen:
one of seven chosen to assist the twelve. Provided welfare to Greek members. Died a martyr’s death by stoning for alleged blasphemy after preaching in the temple. Specifically, Stephen told the Jews that they always reject God’s prophets and that their temple is worthless because God is everywhere.
• Aeneas
[Acts 9:32-33] had been paralyzed for 8-years. Peter heals him
Dorcas
(also called Tabitha) good woman who died and Peter raised from the dead!
Matthias
The new apostle chosen to fill the vacancy in the 12 following Judas’s death.
Philip
One of the seven assistants to the twelve chosen with Stephen. He was a missionary who came upon the Eunuch whom he briefly taught about Christ and baptized all in one encounter. preached the word in samaria
Simon of Samaria:
[Acts 8:9-24] a sorcerer who believes Philip’s preaching of Christ and is baptized. He attempts to buy the priesthood and its power from Peter. Peter reprimands him, telling him his heart is not right and to repent.
Rhoda:
Peter was imprisoned and escaped. He went to the house of Mary and called out; Rhoda heard him but did not open the gate. When she told the apostles who were praying for him they didn’t believe her! Typical! (Acts 12)
Appollos
[Acts 18:24-28] A Jew from Alexandria, baptized, but had not received the gift of the Holy Ghost. He was instructed by Aquila and Priscilla and went on to help many who believed. Well-versed in scripture, he convinced many Jews of the truth of Christ. Went to Corinth with Paul to teach and his name was brought up in a later dispute in 1 Corinthians, (1 Cor. 1:12; 3:4–6, 22; 16:12) When they are concerned about who baptized who and Paul talks about how Christ is not divided and we are all His.
