Subsistence farming: growing only enough for the farmer and family to survive. Scant surplus could be traded to other villagers, but not enough is grown to call your bounty a cash crop.

Charter:a document, issued by a sovereign or state, outlining the conditions under which a corporation, colony, city, or other corporate body is organized, and defining its rights and privileges.
Mayflower Compact:An agreement reached by the Pilgrims on the ship the Mayflower in 1620, just before they landed at Plymouth Rock. The Mayflower Compact bound them to live in a civil society according to their own laws. It remained the fundamental law of their colony of Plymouth until the colony was absorbed into Massachusetts in the late seventeenth century.
