Where is endolymph located and what's its composition? Where is perilymph located and what's its composition?
Perilymph located between bone and membranous labyrinth and is high in Na like extracellular fluid. Endolymph located inside membranous labyrinth and is high in potassium.
What are the 2 main funxns of otolith organs?
sense head translation and head position relative to gravity
Macula of the utricle senses translations in what plane? Macula of the saccule?
horizontal for utricle since it is on basement and saccule does vertical plane
How do the semicircular canals detect angular acceleration of the head?
Endolymph in canals/ampulla push the cupula laying over the hair cells in the ampulla. This causes bending of the hair cells either depolarizing hair cell (bending towards kinocilium) or hyperpolarizing it (away from kino)
what does push-pull organization of the labyrinth mean?
when rotating the head, partnering semicircular canals on opposite sides of head will be opposed to eachother on which is excited and which is inhibited
What happens in the vestibular system and with the vestibulo-ocular reflex when the head turns left?
L. horizontal hair cells depolarize while right hyperp, left vestibular activity incr while right decr, right CNVI and left CN III fires at higher frequency while right CNIII and left CNVI decr.
