Major use of CT scan
Evaluation of patients with acute stroke and head trauma, and in the demonstration of hemorrhage, calcification and skull fracture.

Benefits of MRI
Method of choice for intracranial and intraspinal lesions.
Major advantage of MRI are: 1) greater soft tissue contrast, provides better definition of both normal and anatomic structures and pathologic lesions 2) multiplanar capability (ie, axonal, coronal, and sagittal and 3) visualization of blood flow or cerebrospinal fluid flow. Other advantages include better visualization of the posterior fossa and spinal cord, and lack of ionizing radiation. |
Neuroimaging technique used in MS
MRI because MS plaques are characteristically seen on T2 weighted images as multifocal hyperintense lesions within the perventricular white matter and corpus callosum. Additional lesions within the optic nerves, brainstem, and spinal cord may also be detected.

Gd-MRI vs CECT
Gd-MRI is better at detecting neoplastic and inflammatory lesions. Also meningitis, encephalitis, and myelitis
CT
colors |
Fluid/CSF: black because it is not as dense
Edema: gray Acute hemorrhage: white Bone (dense): whiter |
T1 vs T2 for MRI
T1: CSF is black. Delineates anatomy
T2: CSF is white. Highlights pathology |
