What does the hypothalamus do?

How do you test the corneal reflex?
Lightly touch the cornea with a fine wisp of cotton. Both eyes should blink. Absence of this is a facial nerve dysfunction.
How do you test the gag reflex?
Have the client say "ah" while placing a tongue depressor on the posterior pharynx. Uvula and soft palate should rise. If not= a Vagus nerve dysfunction.
How do you rate muscle tone?
0=worst
5=best
What does the Romberg test do?
Have patient close eyes and observe balance for 20 seconds. Dysfunction- a cerebellum problem
What are some abnormalities in muscle movement?
Rest tremor= all the time
Intention tremor= occurs worse when patient uses an extremity

Chorea= sudden unexpected movements
Athetosis= slow, writing continuous movements
What is stereognosis?
Test ability to feel for a familiar object

Example: Quarter in hand
What is graphesthesia?
Ability to distinguish numbers written on hand

Example: Trace 5 on patients hand while their eye is closed
How do you rate reflexes?
0-plus 4
plus 2 = normal
0= no response
4= hyperactive
What can you use if you can't elicit a deep tendon reflex?
Have patients interlock arms with leg reflex and clench teeth with biceps reflex
How do you test Clonus?
Test w/ hyperactive relfexes
Normal = no contractions/clonus
Raise patients leg and flex foot
What is positive for the Babinski test?
Extension of toes
