NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming)

Creating excellence by studying the connection between language, the mind and behavior.

Anchoring

Anchors are connecting a symbol to the right state of mind. Example: make okay sign with left hand to recall bright and sunny spring day at Grammy and Grandpas pool at their house. Total relaxation and a beautiful lot!

Submliminal

Subliminals are things that we don't consciously perceive. Even though we don't consciously perceive them, they may have an effect on us. Subliminals exert their influence with a few words, a very simple idea or just an image.

Priming

Using a subliminal to amplify a person's emotional needs or other states.

Secure base priming

When a message or experience primes people to feel more secure in some way. Great manipulation tool used by politicians. Donald Trump is a perfect example of this.

Representation

How we represent things in our mind. If you think of a chair it has a certain representation. Did you think of a wooden chair? Was it padded? What color was it? These are specific to US! Others may have totally different representations (chair, etc). We don't just represent objects in our minds; we represent ideas and values!

Firing or Triggering the Anchor

This is when we use an anchor to trigger the intended state.

Framing

"Thinking outside of the box". The assumptions that shape how we perceive something and what choices we think we have. "Frame of mind".

VAK

Visual (seeing), Auditory (hearing) and Kinesthetic (feeling/movement). The three primary senses to learn and communicate.

State

States are the sum total of everything about us at a given time. Can be summed up as being distraught, joyful, excited, etc. These tend to make certain abilities more accessible. Thinking creatively cultivates a creative state.

Breaking State

Using kindling to stop dysfunctional states in order to move into a more appropriate state.

Kindling

Using a certain resource to change states.

Dissociation

Being disconnected from your normal consciousness and center of self. Can reduce your discomfort and add some objectivity when you deal with a difficult issue.

Association

being connected to your experience, being fully aware of your sensations, thoughts and feelings and being very subjective.

Parts

Refers to clusters of values, motivations, and other personality traits that tend to work together, a little bit like a personality. Some call these sub-personalities. Personality when at a beach contrasts with personality when at work. We can use these to align us for making a good decision, handling a challenge or communicating well.

Congruence

When our parts harmonize we become this. Also known as agreement. We are in___________ if our behaviors do not match our words and so on.

Objectivity

the verifiable information that we can actually account for like historical and scientific facts.

Subjectivity

our personal take on what happens; how we react to things internally.

E-prime

a version of english which removes the use of the verb "to be" and all it's variations. Typically propaganda makes much heavier use of the verb "to be" than other writing. The constitution has a very low use of "to be".

General Semantics

This tells us that our nervous systems, culture and language limit our ability to perceive reality. This provided the basis for the NLP meta-model.

First Factor in a well formed outcome

In positive terms, what do "I" want? Has to be 100 percent positive and about what I truly want, not what others want. Helps build dogged persistence and motivation.

Second factor in a well formed outcome

Transform the answer into a sense based language. Convert the answer from the first factor into sense-based language. Describe your outcome in terms of what you can see, touch, feel, taste and smell. "How will you know when you get there?"Answer the question with very concrete things, that is, things that you can see, hear and touch.

Third factor in a well formed outcome

Self-initiated and self-controlled. Ask this question - "How am I connected to this outcome through things that I directly cause?" This takes us into the accountability zone. Focus on what you can control and not what others control or what you cannot control!

Fourth factor in a well formed outcome

Contextualize the outcome. Ask when and where it should take place. Describe the circumstances of your outcome.

Fifth factor in a well formed outcome

Secondary Gain and Ecology. Personal ecology means that you consider your personal needs, aspirations and values in the outcome. Personal ecology gives an important edge to your plans because it brings about inner alignment. If any part of us feels at all uncomfortable with the outcome then we should add, remove or improve whatever aspects are needed to eliminate this discomfort.

Sixth factor in a well formed outcome

Resources. "Do I have all the resources I need to achieve my outcome?" "Are the costs and consequences of obtaining this outcome acceptable?" Every idea has its costs and sacrifices. As you think through the path to your outcome, what will you need along the way?

Mind mapping

mapping out all the resources that connect me with my outcome and then all the means I might use to get those resources in place, on time and on budget. These can include things other than just money and objects. They can include "soft resources" like time, knowledge, connections, good will and so on.

Seventh factor in a well formed outcome

Whole System Ecology - thinking about not just our own personal ecology but other individuals and systems as well. Systems meaning families, schools, regulatory institutions and so on. Does our outcome so far impari our relationship with any other individuals or systems?

Ecology

Where all parts of us agree with the outcome; where our desires, values and needs are all aligned into one powerful direction.
