Days 19-25: Neurulation
1. The Ectoderm near the middle thickens, forming an elevated neural plate

2. The neural plate invaginates to form a neural groove

3. The neuro-epithelium wrinkles and folds over. A crease develops along the axis the neural groove as the neural folds gradually move together

4. Where the neural folds meet, they fuse to form a cylindrical neural tube

5. The Endoderm and the Ectoderm continue to fuse around and fuse beneath the embryo to create the body cavity
Results of Neurolation
NEURAL TUBE = brain and cord
NEURAL CREST CELLS = peripheral tissues = parasympathetic and sympathetic ganglia
Week 5: Formation of the Pituitary gland
1. formation of the Ectodermal pocket
2. pocket detaches
3. creates a hollow ball of cells
4. undergoes mitosis = anterior lobe of Pituitary gland
5. development off of hypothalamus = posterior lobe
Derivatives of the Somites
Sclerotome: Cartilage, tendons and vertebral column
Myotome: muscle
Dermatome: dermis of the skin
SMD
The GUT
The internal organs of the cavity, consisting of the foregut and the hindgut. Originating from the Endoderm
