Which spinal tracts have both ascending (sensory) and descending (motor) components?
Propriospinal Tracts which surround gray maater in spinal cord like a thin shell and function as shorter tracts that interconnect spinal cord levels.
Describe the function and general course of ascending pathways....
Function is to carry sensory information to the CNS and most run on a 3-neuron-connection
Describe the ascending pathway known as the Posterior Column Medial Lemniscus (PCML)....
Comprised of the Posterior Funiculus (including Fasciculus Gracilis which carries information from lower body and Fasciculus Cuneatus which carries info from upper body) and it's primary function is to discriminate touch and conscious proprioception
Its primary receptors are going to be cutaneous receptors, muscle spindles, and GTOs
Describe some of the symptoms of PCML damage?
1. Ataxia- motor incoordination
2. Rhomber's sign-swaying when trying to stand erect with feet together and eyes closed.
3. Astereognosis- inability to judge an object when pressed against skin with no visual input
