What is the difference between overt and covert attention?

Overt attention - Focus corresponds with sensory orientation

Covert attention - Focus on stimuli independent of sensory orientation

What are the classes of attention?

Exogenous Attention - 'Reflexive' attention - driven by distinctive environmental stimuli

Not conscious

Endogenous Attention - 'Voluntary' attention - driven by specific environmetal stimuli aligning with goals/interest

Conscious

What is the difference between a feature search and a conjunctive search?

1. Feature search - chosen item varies in only one dimension from background or distracting stimuli

2. Conjunctive search - chosen item contain multiple stimulus feature (banana AND ripe AND large)

What is an EEG?

Electrodes on scalp measure brain's electrical activity during a task. Highest peaks show important features of attention and not just responses to sensory stimuli

What are subcortical and cortical structures?

Subcortical - "deep brain" - Pulvinar and Superior colliculus

Cortical structures - cerebral cortex

Describe the subcortical regions.

• Pulvinar

--- Orienting/shiftingattention

--- Filtering outirrelevantinformation

• Superior colliculus

--- Movement ofeyes towardsobject ofattention

Describe the cortical regions.

• Dorsal frontoparietalsystem

--- Conscious control ofattention

--- IPS neurons in humansactive in endogenousattention

• Right temporoparietalsystem

--- Active in exogenousattention

--- Helps to reassignattention

What is consciousness?

Being aware of one's own existence, thoughts, emotions, and experiences
