What are the 2 questions you need to ask yourself when testing spinal reflexes?
1. Does it work? -considers LMN

2. Is it normal?- considers both LMN and UMN
What is considered a normal reflex?
Normal reflex is immediate on stimulus, lasts for duration of stimulus, stops immediately when stimulus is removed
How are reflexes graded?
0 = Absent (LMN problem either central or peripheral)
+1 = Depressed - hyporeflexia(LMN problem either central or peripheral)
+2= Normal (LMN working normally)
+3= Exxagerated hyperreflexia (UMN problem or LMN are inflamed)
+4= Very exaggerated (clonus) (UMN problem or LMN are inflamed)
What are the 4 components of all reflexes?
1. Afferent limb
2. Interneuron
3. LMN (efferent limb)
4. Effector organ
What are the 2 types of spinal reflexes?
1. Monosynaptic reflexes: afferent neurons go directly to LMN and do not use interneurons

2. Multisynaptic reflexes: multiple interneurons between afferent and efferent loop
