What does the term horizontal section mean?
A horizontal plane cuts across a structure at right angles to the long axis of a structure creating a horizontal section, or cross, section.
What about coronal section?
A coronal plane divides a structure into anterior and posterior portions. The plane of an actual cut is used to name the cut surface. A cut through the brain along the coronal plane is called a coronal section.
What is a sagittal section?
A sagittal plane divides a structure into right and left portions. A midsagittal plane divides a structure into right and left halves, while a parallel cut produces parasagittal sections.
What is white matter?
- collection of myelinated fibers
- areas with a large proportion of myelin appear white because of the high fat content of myelin
- divided into 3 columns: anterior, lateral and dorsal
What is gray matter?
- collections of cell bodies and dendrites
What is a nucleus?
A group of cell bodies in the CNS
What is a ganglion?
A group of cell bodies in the PNS
What is the cortex?
Gray matter on the surface of the brain
What is the cerebral cortex responsible for?
- reasoning, language, non-verbal communication, intelligence, personality
What is afferent?
- carries information from the peripheral receptors toward the CNS.
