What 2 arteries supply blood to the CNS?
-internal carotid arteries

-vertebral arteries
What supplies the "anterior circulation"?
internal carotid arteries
What supplies the "posterior circulation"?
vertebral arteries
Where are the carotid and vertebral arteries connected?
-circle of Willis

--also by anastomoses by branches of cerebral arteris
What supplies blood to the spinal cord and brainstem?
-almost exclusively by the posterior circulation (vertebral arteries)
Apart from the vertebral arteries (basilar artery), what contributes to blood flow here?
The spinal arteries help out a little
Where does the midbrain get its blood supply?
Mainly the posterior cerebral artery branches and a little from the vertebral(basilar).
Where do the pons and cerebellum get their blood flow?
The basilar artery (vertebral)
Where do the diencephalon and telencephalon get their supply of blood?
Both the internal coratid and vertebral arteries

-anastomosis takes place to accomplish mixing
What are the 3 classifications of branches of the circle of Willis and a couple pts about them?
-central (perforating) arteries - supply deep, are small (easily blocked), are usually end arteries

-cortical branches - cover large surface area of cortex, overlap causing anastomoses

-choroidal branches - sub-type of branch, supply CSF producing structures like choroid plexi
What are the 3 major branches of the ICA (internal carotid artery)?
-Ophthalmic tract - supplies the retina - terminal

-ACA (Anterior cerebral artery) - terminal

-MCA (middle cerebral artery)
artery) - circley
What does the ACA supply (anterior cerebral artery)?
-most of medial surface of brain

-optic chiasm

-AComm (anterior communicating artery) of ACA makes the circle of Willis

-corpus callosum
What are 4 branches of the Basilar/Vertebral artery?
-PCA (posterior cerebral artery)

-SCA (superior cerebellar artery)

-AICA (anterior inferior cerebellar artery)

-PICA (posterior inferior cerebellar artery)
What does the MCA (middle cerebral artery) supply?
-thalamus, basal ganglia, auditory cortex, motor/somatosensory cortex, parietal lobe.

-Pcomm (posterior communicating artery) connects MCA and PCA (part of the cirlce of Willis)
What does the PCA (posterior cerebral artery) supply?
-thalamus, hypothalamus, visual cortex
What are the 2 main branches of the circle of Willis that make it so magical?
-AComm - direct connection between the the two sides of the ACA

PComm - connection between MCA and the PCA
Where do the vertebral arteries join and become the Basilar artery?
the pons medullary junction (the dividing line between pons and medulla)
Why are occlusions and their effects rarer in the venous system of CNS?
highly anastomosotic - the interconnections compensate - effects are usually transient
What are the two routes for venous drainage?
-Deep - drain for telencephalon and diencephalon

-Superficial - drain for gray and white matter of cerebral cortex
Where do the spinal cord and caudal medulla drain?
spinal veins into systemic venous return
What are some of the main Superficial vein drains?
-superior sagittal sinus

-superficial middle cerebral vein

-inferior anastomotic veins
What are some of the main Deep vein drains?
-thalamostriate vein

-choroidal vein

-internal cerebral vein

-Great cerebral vein
