Verbal Paraphasia
are errors in which an incorrect word unintentionally is substitued for target word( i.e door for window or knife for fork).
Literal Paraphasia
phonologic errors in which incorrect sounds replace correct sounds( i.e. shooshburss for toothbrush). It denotes a pattern of articulatory errors.
Broca's aphasia
- caused by occlusion of ant. branch of middle cerebral artery
-makes up lower part of premotor cortex
-pyramidal tract fibers pass under it, which causes individuals to have right side hemiplegia or paresis
-patient are nonfluent ( group words together, abnormal pauses, often sound telegraphic)
-Writing takes great effort and resembles the way they speak
- comprehend spoken and written language better but both are still impaired to a degree
- are aware of communication impairments and may become upset when make speech error
3 categories of Verbal Paraphasia
-Semantic paraphasia: substitutions of semantically related words for target words ( father for mother)
-Unrelated paraphasia: substititions in which subtituted words have no clear relationship to target word ( cigarette for motorcycle)
-Perseverative paraphasia: substititions in which previously used word is substituted for a target word such as when patient has correctly named comb calls a key a comb.
