What are the 3 parts of the Trigeminal Nucleus?
1. Principle/Chief Trigeminal nucleus
2. Spinal Trigeminal n
3. Mesencephalic n (not necessary)
What are the 3 parts of the spinal trigeminal n and location of the nuclei?
- mid-pons caudally and becomes dorsal horn
1. oral
2. interpolar
3. caudal
Where is the principle/chief trigeminal nucleus located? What type of fibers synapse here?
mid pontine
Touch, vibration, proprioception
What is the pathway of the cranial touch?
- Enters via trigeminal ganglion in the sensory root to enter pons
- syapses at level at Principle Trigeminal N
- crosses at level
- ascends via the trigeminalthalamic tract (medial to medial lemniscus)
- enters VPM
- terminates in the Somatosensory region of the head (ventral)
Where is the caudal trigeminal nuclei located? what type of fibers synapse here?
Obex down to the cervical cord
pain and temperature
What is the pathway of the cranial pain/temp?
- Enters via trigeminal ganglion in the sensory root to enter at the pons
- descend via spinotrigeminal tract (lateral to spinotrigeminal nucleus)
- synapse within the caudal trigeminal nucleus
- cross at this level
- ascend and then at pons level join the touch fibers
- VPM
- primary sensory cortex, face area
What is the function of the thalamus?
- gateway to the cortex
- process and relays sensory information to various parts of the cortex
- recipricol connections with cortex (arrousal)
= process and relays BG/Cere to cortex
What are the areas of the thalamus? what do they correspond to?
Medial (slow pain)
Anterior
Poster: (4)
VA (BG)
VL (cerebellum)
VPL (contralateral trunks/limbs)
VPM (contralateral face)
What area of the cortex does the VA project to and what level of the thalamus is it found at?
- projects to the premotor cortex
- optic chiasm
What area of the cortex does the VL project to and what level of the thalamus is it found at?
- projects to the primary motor cortex (pposterior precentral gyrus near the central sulcus)
- tubular region of the thalamus
What region of the cortex does the VPM project to and what level of the thalamus is this at?
- post central gyrus (primary sensory cortex)
- red nucleus
What region of the cortex does the VPM project to and what level of the thalamus is this found at?
- post centrla gyrus (primary sensory cortex, ventral region for face)
- red nucleus
