What is a network?

A network is a collection of two or more computers connected together. This means they can share information (like files) and resources (like printers) Networks are expensive to set up and can spread viruses quickly between networked computers.

Network topology:

A topology is a way of laying out a network.There are three typologies:


Ring, Bus and Star.

LAN and WAN:

LAN stands for Local Area Network and means that computers are joined over a small geographical area (like a house).

WAN stands for Wide Area Network and means that computers are joined over a large geographical area (like the world eg the internet).

Network hardware:

Network adapter: Allows a computer to connect to the network.Ethernet cable: Links different devices on the network together.Router: Joins different networks together, for example your home network and the internet.Switch: Connects devices together, sends any data it receives to the device it is meant for.Hub: Connects devices together, sends any data it receives to all the devices connected to it.Wireless access point: Provides wireless access to a wired network.
