Network-Based Firewalls
Reside on the network. They are usually hardware, but augmented with additional software.
Single Firewall Configuration
Uses only one firewall, which is placed between the external network and the internal network. This also allows for servers to be segregated from the main internal network.
Dual Firewall Configuration
Places an extra layer of protection. Uses a DMZ, where certain types of servers are often placed, such as DNS servers, web servers, FTP servers. These are placed here because they are servers that generally need access to both the internal and external network without compromising the internal network.
Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)
The area that acts as a buffer between internal and external networks.
Host-Based Firewalls
These firewalls have the ability to evaluate packets that arrived in the host and determine whether they are malicious.
