inter

between

intra

within

algia

pain

esthesia

perceive sensation

mural

wall

plegia

paralysis

afferent

impulse originates in the periphery and travels to the CNS

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

Often referred to as the "visceral motor system"; has two motor divisions, sympathetic and parasympathetic; consists of fibers that innervate involuntary (smooth) muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands

Axon

a nerve fiber, the single long cytoplasmic process of the cell body

cell body

the part of the nerve cell containing the nucleus and other cytoplasmic organelles

dendrite

cytoplasmic process that radiate from the neuron cell body; similar in structure to axons, but typically for a tree-like branching pattern; comprise most of the receptor surface of a neuron (dendron: greek for tree)

effector organ (tissue)

an organ or tissue that produces an effect, ex. skeletal m, smooth m, cardiac m, glands

ganglion

an anatomically distinct collection of neuron cell bodies located in the PNS

gray matter

CNS tissue whcih contains a predominance of nerve cell bodies and non-mylinated axons

nerve

bundle of axons in the PNS, which are held together by layers of connective tissue

neuron

a type of call specialized to conduct electrical impulse

nucleus

a collectof neuron cell bodies located in the CNS (compared to Ganglion)

neurotransmitters

chemicals released into the synapse that allow transmission of the electrical impulse to another cell; allow communication between cells as the synapsep

plexus

a complex, interwoven network of peripheral nerves

reflex

a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus

reflex arc

the receptor, sensory neuron, motor neuron, and effector (ex. muscle) involved in a particular reflex

somatic nervous system

from the Greek work soma, which means "body"; transmits sensations of touch, pain, temperature, and proprioception from sensory receptors to skin, mucosa, skeletal muscles and joint capsules; in other words, provides information about the external environment, and the body's position within the environment; permits voluntary and reflexive movement produced by skeletal muscle contraction

synapse

a specialized site where a neuron communicates with another cell (another neuron, a muscle cel, or a gland cell)

target tissue

a cell or an organ tha tis selectively affected by a particular agent

tract

bundle of axons located in the CNS (compare to Nerve)

white matter

CNS tissue that is predominantly myelinated axon; organized into tracts
