What is the central nervous system composed of? |
Brain and spinal chord |
What is the brain composed of? |
the cerebrum (cerebral cortex), cerebellum and brain stem (medulla oblogata and pons) |
What does the brain give rise to? |
Cranial nerves serving the head and facial region |
Where is the spinal chord and what does it give rise to? |
Runs down the center of the vertebral column (the neural canal) Gives rise to spinal nerves serving the body trunk and limbs |
What is the Peripheral nervous system composed of? |
The nerves connecting the brain and spinal chord to the rest of the body |
Describe cranial nerves |
Originate directly from the brain eg optic nerve, olfactory (smell/taste) nerve, and they serve structures mainly in the head |
Describe spinal nerves |
Originate from the spinal chord and serve all other regions of the body eg thorax, abdomen, limbs etc |
What are nervous systems composed of ? |
Nerve cells known as neurones |
What are the three types of neurones? |
Sensory neurones Motor (effector) neurones Association neurones |
What do sensory neurones do? |
Carry nerve messages into the CNS |
What do motor (effector) neurones do? |
Carry nerve impulses to effectors (eg muscles) |
What do association neurones do? |
Relay messages between sensory and motor neurones |
