What is the central nervous system composed of?

Brain and spinal chord

What is the brain composed of?

the cerebrum (cerebral cortex), cerebellum and brain stem (medulla oblogata and pons)

What does the brain give rise to?

Cranial nerves serving the head and facial region

Where is the spinal chord and what does it give rise to?

Runs down the center of the vertebral column (the neural canal)

Gives rise to spinal nerves serving the body trunk and limbs

What is the Peripheral nervous system composed of?

The nerves connecting the brain and spinal chord to the rest of the body

Describe cranial nerves

Originate directly from the brain eg optic nerve, olfactory (smell/taste) nerve, and they serve structures mainly in the head

Describe spinal nerves

Originate from the spinal chord and serve all other regions of the body eg thorax, abdomen, limbs etc

What are nervous systems composed of ?

Nerve cells known as neurones

What are the three types of neurones?

Sensory neurones

Motor (effector) neurones

Association neurones

What do sensory neurones do?

Carry nerve messages into the CNS

What do motor (effector) neurones do?

Carry nerve impulses to effectors (eg muscles)

What do association neurones do?

Relay messages between sensory and motor neurones
