What is a synapse?
A gap where two neurones meet.
What does a receptor do?
Stimulates and sends a signal along the nerve cells (neurones) to the brain.
What does an effector do?
Produces a response.
What does the nervous system consist of?
The brain and spinal cord.
What is a reflex action?
An extra-rapid response to a stimulus.
Is the brain involved in reflex actions?
No!
What are receptors?
Specialised cells that detect stimuli.
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment.
How do signals cross the synapse?
One neurone releases a chemical into the gap (synapse). The chemical diffuses across the gap, making the next neurone transmit an electrical signal.
What are the receptors in the eyes sensitive to?
Light.
What are the receptors in the ears sensitive to?
Sound and the position of the head.
What are the receptors in the tongue sensitive to?
Chemicals in food.
What are receptors in the nose sensitive to?
Chemicals in the air.
What are receptors in the skin sensitive to?
Touch, pressure, pain and temperature.
Name the three types of neurones.
Sensory, Relay and Motor.
What does the Motor neurone do?
Carries signals from the CNS to the effectors.
What does the Sensory neurone do?
Carries signals to the spinal cord and brain from the receptors.
What does the Relay neurone do?
Carries messages from one part of the CNS to another.
Do neurones (nerve cells) contain a nucleus?
Yes.
What are hormones secreted by?
Glands.
Where are the hormones transported from the glands to the organs?
Bloodstream.
Name the glands.
Brain, Thyroid gland, Pancreas, Testes, Adrenal glands and Ovaries.
What is the body controlled by?
The nervous system & hormones.
What causes an egg to mature in the ovary?
FSH.
What stops FSH produce so only one egg can mature?
Oestrogen.
What stimulates the ovaries so the hormone oestrogen can be produced?
FSH.
What is tropism?
The growth in response to a stimulus.
What is auxin?
A plant hormone that controls the direction of growth.
Where is auxin made?
In the tips of the roots and shoots of a plant.
What is phototropism?
Tropism where light is the stimulus.
Name 2 uses of plant hormones.
1. Weed killers.

2. Rooting powder.
