What is the most common cutaneous tumor in horses worldwide?
Equine Sarcoid
What is the most likely cause of Equine Sarcoids?
papilloma virus
Are sarcoid aggressive?
yes locally
T/F Flies may play an imp part of sarcoid pathogensis.
T
T/F Sarcoids metatasize to secondary sites like the lungs.
F
What is the most common signalment of sarcoid patient?
1-6 year old
Gelding
Single sarcoid lesions are often assocaited wtih __ sites.
wound
T/F Sarcoids can multiply on the individual or remain static
T
T/F Sarcoids can spontaneous, completely, and permanently self-cure.
T
6 Forms of Sarcoids are
Occult
Verrucous (warty)
Nodular
Fibroblastic
Mixed
Malevolent
Describe the predilection sites of each form of sarcoid
Occult -
around mouth eyes, neck, medial aspects of forarm and thigh

Verrucous (warty) -
face, body, groin/sheath

Nodular -
grouin sheath eyelids

Fibroblastic -
groin, eyelid lower limbs, coronary band, sites of previous skin injury, site of other sarcoids when injured

Mixed-
face, eyelid, groin, medial thigh

Malevolent-
newly described - jaw, face, elbow, and medial thigh (hx of repeated trauma to other types, ie sx)
Describe each of the forms of sarcoids?
Occult -
roughly, circular hairless areas, mildly hyperketotic

Verrucous-
wart-like growth in and on skin
lesions maybe sessile (flat-based) or pedunculated (narrow neck)

Nodular-
firm, well-defined SQ spherical nodules (single, few, or hundreds), +/- freely movable

Fibroblastic-
agreesive, fleshy, ulcerated
T/F All forms of sarcoids may become fibroblastic.
T
Occult form of sarcoids are slow-growing and may progress to __ or __.
verrucous fibroblatic
What stimulus often initates a form of sarcoid to progress to fibroblastic?
injury or interfered with
T/F Nodular forms of sarcoid tend to be found on thick skin.
F - thin skin
What is the problem with fibroblastic sarcoids? (2)
B-E AGG-R-ESS-IVE :-0
LOCALLY INVASIVE
Dx of sarcoid
signs
biopsy?? risky business
Sarcoid Px
guarded
Sarcoid Tx
1. benign neglent - too large/small esp occult and small verrucous forms
2.cryotherapy, sx excision, immunotherapy, laser, local radiaion, topical intratumoral inj of antineoplastic drugs
3. large lesions - sx debunking w/other tx
4. intralesional inj - antineoplastic
what is the 2nd most common cutaneous equine tumor?
melanoma (melanosarcoma)
What is the usual signalment of melanoma?
gray (arab or perchaeron)
>6-8yrs
What is melanoma?
benign tumors of melanocytes
non-invasive space-occupying lesions
Most common sites of melanoma? (4)
anus
vulva
tail
prepuce
3 types of melonoma growth patterns?
slow growth and no mets
slow growth for years --> sudden growth w/mets
rapid growth and malignancy from begining
What do they look like? Size? Location of Melanoma
small --> large
firm spherical nodules, maybe pedunculated
skin or SQ
T/F melonmas are typically slow growing
T
How can melanomas interfer with other organs/ts?
pressure necrosis
If a melanomas ulcerates how do you know?
produce thick, black, tarry discharge
Dx of melanoma?
signs
FNA
Tx of Melanoma (2)
single lesion - sx (wide margin)
cryosx and cimetidine - variable results
Px of Melanoma
Caution - esp w/grays w/severe aggressive melanosarcoma may result
T/F Chesnuts have their own special melanoma.
T - Amelonma melanoma
What is an invasive tumor of squamous epithelial cells at mucocutaneous junctions, head, and genitalia?
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
The skin and eye forms of SCC can be caused by what?
chronic high UV light
SMEGMA can cause what?
SCC of the weiner
T/F SCC is no agressive in younger horses
F is VERY aggressive in young horses and have mets to ln
T/F the ocular form of SCC is often benign, proliferative and can ulcerate the 3rd eyelid
T
T/F in older horses SCC is aggressive locally, but can also met
T
4 CS of SCC
solitary granulating, ulcerated "sore" that wont heal
small verrucous nodules in the genitalia
necrosis
odor
Dx SCC
biopsy
SCC Tx (3)
Early - Sx w/wide margins
Amputation of tail, enucleation of eye, remove 3rd eyelid, amuptation of the weiner (bobitectomy-hahahahah i so funny)
other - cryotherapy, hyperthermia, radiation therapy
T/F All 2-3 year old horses get warts
T
What should be kicking you in the face if a 3-5yr old has warts?
immunosuppression
Tx of Warts
Time
Euth - jk
