What are the functions of the carotid sinus and carotid body and where are they found?
carotid sinus: pressure sensor
carotid body: oxygen sensor
found at the carotid bifurcation
What branches are from the Second Part of the Subclavian Artery?
Costocervical trunk which branches into the deep cervical artery and the superior intercostal artery
Name the branches coming off the external carotid artery in order going up to the head.
External carotid artery-->superior thyroid (muscular branches + superior laryngeal artery)-->ascending pharyngeal artery-->lingual artery-->facial artery (ascending palatine artery + tonsilar artery + glandular branches)-->occipital artery-->posterior auricular artery-->ends by diving to superficial temporal artery + maxillary artery
What is found at the third part of the subclavian artery?
usually no branches. sometimes the suprascapular artery originates here. sometimes Dorsal scapular artery originates here.
What arteries are contained in the posterior triangle of the neck in order?
-subclavian artery-->transverse cervical artery and suprascapular artery (both from thyrocervical trunk)
-Occipital artery (from the external carotid artery that's from the common carotid artery)
What are the arteries in the anterior triangle of the neck?
Common, Internal and External Carotid arteries and all branches
What are the arteries in the root of the neck?
Brachiocephalic trunk and subclavian arteries and all branches
What are the veins of the posterior triangle of the neck?
external jugular vein and subclavian vein
What are the veins in the carotid subtriangle?
-Anterior jugular vein: drains into external jugular or subclavian vein
-external jugular vein: drains into subclavian vein
-internal jugular vein: tributaries are from the facial, lingual, pharyngeal, and thyroid veins
What is found in the submandibular triangle of the neck?
submandibular gland, traversed by hypoglossal nerve (CN12), nerve to mylohyoid muscle, facial artery and vein, lingual artery and vein, submental arty and submandibular lymph nodes.
What are the three layers of cervical viscera and their contents?
-Endocrine layer (superficial): thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, thymus
-Respiratory layer (Middle): larynx and trachea
-alimentary layer (deep): pharynx and esophagus
What is the arterial supply of the thyroid gland?
superior thyroid artery (from external carotid artery) and inferior thyroid artery (from thyrocervical trunk)
what is the venous drainage of the thyroid gland?
3 pairs of veins: superior thyroid vein, middle thyroid vein, inferior thyroid vein
What is the nerve supply of the thyroid gland?
cervical sympathetic ganglia
Where are parathyroid glands found and what are their functions?
-found on posterior surface of the thyroid gland; lie just lateral to the anastomosis between superior and inferior thyroid arteries
-essential for life: tetany occurs without them and severe convulsions due to fall in blood calcium levels
-same arterial, venous, nerve, and lymphatic supplies with thyroid gland
What does the horizontal superficial ring of the lymphatic system surround? what does the horizontal deep ring of the lymphatic system surround?
-transition area between head and neck
-visceral structures of the neck
What is the flow of the Lymphatic system from the horizontal superficial and deep rings to the left and right sides out?
-Left: left deep cervical chain drains into the thoracic duct-->junction of the subclavian and the internal jugular vein
-Right: right deep cervical chain drains into Common Right Lymphatic duct-->drains into the junction of the subclavian and internal jugular vein.
Name the flow of lymph for the following: lower lip, chin, upper lip, cheek, eyelids, temples, prominence of cheek, scalp
Name the flow of lymph for the following: tongue - tip, lateral part of ant. 2/3, medial part of ant 2/3, post 1/3
Name the flow of lymph for the following: maxillary teeth, mandibular teeth, gingiva/floor of mouth (ant. floor of mouth, vestibular gingiva of max and mand, mandibular lingual gingiva and floor of mouth, palatal gingiva)
